Santo Domingo. Because 70% of our bodies are composed by water, people need to interest further in consuming it. For this, and many other reasons. The best skin lotion is a glass of water. Water is the best expectorant and a great remedy to counteract diarrhea. It needs to be drank at room temperature (because the body takes 2hrs to warm cold water in order to assimilate it). It is not good to drink it with your food, because it dilutes the enzymes and gastric juices, thus slowing your digestion. Symptoms associated to dehydration reach around 30, amond them stress, headaches, constipation, high blood pressure and kidney problems.
The best sign to find out if you are dehydrated or not is urine: the darker and odorous, the less amount of water you have stored in your body. These recommendations and observations come from José Santos Taveras and Wendy Santos Berroa, President and VP respectively, of Agua Planeta Azul, the largest water bottling plant inland. Even though he is an economist and she is an attorney, the love for the work they have been doing and the commitment they affirm with their clientele, has motivated them to learn everything about the liquid. They know a lot about water and they continue to research about it every day, now that it has been inserted in the Food Code as the #1 food in the family basket, says José.
“Water features two extreme characteristics: it is vital or deadly. It has another which is terrible: it is hydrotopic, it sticks to everything, and everything sticks to it. If you place a glass of water and a bit of steak next to it, 30mins later the water will taste of steak”, says José, whom assures that it is more difficult to treat water than milk. Why? Because as soon as milk is contaminated with bacteria it will begin decomposing and you can tell right way, because it stinks and becomes lumpy. It doesn’t happen the same way with water. “You can see a beautiful glass of water, and it can be a source of ill”.
Distinguish the water. Given that the different presentations for bottled water appear to offer quality, how do you distinguish as a consumer well treated water from poorly treated water? For the customer to find the answer to that question, they need to become interested in the production of the water they consume, the company that bottles it, and the quality standards under which this company operates, says Wendy, certified plant operator.
In that aspect, they point out that Planeta Azul meets the local standards as well as the most demanding international requirements. It is the only water in the local market that is “non-hard”, as soft, ensures José, that it detoxifies the palate in only 15 days of daily consumption, due to not containing any dissolved solids (substances different to hydrogen and oxygen, which are the main components). Locally the company has attained the “Digenor Quality Seal”, and after being audited by the National Sanitation Foundation of the United States (NFS Intl.), achieving scores above 97 points for six consecutive years, the Latin America division of the International Council of Water Bottling Association (ICBWA) granted them the certification of “Excellence to International Quality” José was the first Latin American businessman to be inserted in the Processed Water Industry Hall of Fame in El Salvador. From producing 4,500 bottles in 1990, the company doubled the amount by 1991. Currently they have the capacity to place 20 million liters of water per day.
A VERY ECOLOGICAL BOTTLE. With 21 years in the market, 528 employees and three plants, Agua Planeta Azul changes the presentation of their classic bottle and introduces “Eco-Shape” in harmony with all environmental programs they have been implementing since years ago. Thanks to the design, the new bottle demands less amount of plastic per surface unit, which facilitates its grasping and recycling.
“By the shape of its design it resists just like the traditional bottle, but by featuring less amount of material it is less contaminating to the environment and it decreases costs. This bottle, made the traditional way, would have cost me 5 to 6 cents more” says José Santos Taveras. Planeta Azul involves in its manpower the residents of the barrio La Yagüita, which is the closes borough to the main production plant, with their environmental projects such as recycling. With this goal, the bottling plant has promoted workshops aimed at women featuring the artisan Daicy David, whom uses company bottles to create arts and crafts, asides bijouterie. How do you know how much water you need to drink? Weigh yourself, divide the result times two and that is the amount of daily ounces to ingest.
