During the Cruise season 2012-2013, the MSC Lirica brought along some 18,000 tourists to the Sans Soucí Port, in Santo Domingo, and to close the cycle, thus promoting a taste of Dominican culture among the visitors, the port’s management team organized a special farewell. The MSC Lirica , featuring tourists, mainly of European and Latin American origin, was bid farewell with a carnivalesque theme, in celebration of carnival season, adorned by the rhythm and color typical of the characters conforming this celebration.
The ship docked in Santo Domingo in order to make their last dockage of the season, a term amid which it docked ten times, thus forming part of the formal debut of tourist arrivals to the Prime City of the Americas.
The farewell to all vessel passengers was animated by a Carnival parade organized by the Youths for a Better Colonial Zone Foundation ( Fundación Jóvenes por una Mejor Zona Colonial, a neighbouring community to the Port of Santo Domingo, whom paraded in their costumes and emblematic attires typical of this tradition, hence infusing he venue with enthusiasm. Likewise, amid the activity, the tourists sampled many Dominican products such as beer and chocolate, in their many presentations.
Sharon Mei, Commercial Director of Sans Soucí Ports, emphasized the importance of showing the cultural and folkloric traditions of the Dominican Republic to the tourists. “The carnival is a tourist attraction, that needs to be promoted among tourists because it allows them to partake in one of our most joyful traditions”.
